AOS LOWER SCHOOL NOTE – by Mrs. Kay Pickett, Head of Lower School
May 2, 2008
3rd Graders Support 4th
Graders with Safety Patrol: After meeting with Sgt. Glenn to learn the safety rules about how
to help children in and out of cars, interested 3rd graders have
been helping out with carpool. Their
eagerness and willingness to step up to the plate is appreciated. The 4th graders have been doing an
excellent job all year, but as summer approaches and their responsibilities
have increased, they also appreciate the help!
4th Graders Assist 1st
Grade Buddies: 4th graders love working with
their younger buddy friends on various projects. They are now helping each child make a
full-sized silhouette of themselves which will become the holder for memories
of 1st grade. Each silhouette
will have a large bag on the front so that friends, parents, or teachers can
add their memories of the child from this year.
I am always struck by the patience I see in the 4th graders
as they strive to keep their buddies focused while still having fun and being
productive. Watch for them to be
finished and add your memories for the 1st graders.
Kindergartners Release their
Butterflies: The kindergartners have been studying the
life cycle of the butterfly. Receiving
fuzzy caterpillars, the children watched with excitement as the cocoons began
to form. Each child was then assigned
one of the cocoons to observe. What fun
it was each day to discover which new butterflies had emerged! Finally, all had arrived, and a very ceremonious
release occurred in the butterfly garden of the middle school on Wed; by
Thurs., every child that spotted a butterfly in the air knew it was their own! Olivia Mustachia
wrote in her journal: I wish I code cepe
my butrfllye becos I love
it and it is soe byotufle
and jest prfict and smrt
and I love it varye varye varye muoch!. In case you do not read “kindergartenese”: I
wish I could keep my butterfly because I love it, and it is so beautiful and
just perfect and smart and I love it very, very, very much!
National Day of Prayer: Father Jim Nutter from the Palmer
Memorial Episcopal Church was our guest speaker this last Thurs. for our
National Day of Prayer Chapel. His message was that we all need to keep our
connection to God open and viable through prayer. At AOS, we all realize and appreciate the
value of prayer!
Breaking our Special Red Eggs:
Following Orthodox Easter each year, the children look forward to breaking
brightly colored red eggs with each other. The red color
represents the blood of Jesus, and as the eggs open, it is symbolic of the tomb
opening and Christ rising. It is no
easy task to have over 650 eggs dyed and ready for this fun, but meaningful
event. We would like to thank those who
helped: Mrs. Penny Solomos,
Georgia Butta, JoAnna Nicolaou,
and Chris McGee. We also thank Georgia Caloudas who donated the eggs to the school. We wish a get well message to Tina Batmanis,
who would have been there per usual, except she was in the hospital. Thanks to all of you, and get well, Tina! Christ has risen–Truly He has risen! Christos Anesti – Alithos Anesti!
THE AOS OLYMPICS ARE ALMOST HERE!
Next Friday is THE day! Parents,
if you have not already received the memo… you do NOT want to miss this fun
event. Opening Ceremonies begin at 8:30 a.m. and the closing ceremony will begin
at 2:00 p.m. The event is an all
day event… you will receive schedules next week, and your child’s T-shirt will
go home today. It should not be worn
until next Friday. Think of perfect
weather only!
Swim Days on May 15 and 16:
Please note the bright yellow swim schedule in your child’s folder
today. One important rule for girls this
year, we have requested that all bathing suits be ONE PIECE. I know it may not be the most stylish, but it
eliminates problems of what is acceptable and what is not. Thanks to the many parents who help this most
fun day happen! The PE staff is also
amazing…two weeks in a row with mega activities!
Remember to Attend the Night of the
Arts! What a spectacular evening it is! The Orffestra will
begin their music in the halls at 5:00 p.m. as parents, friends, and students
can walk around to view artwork from all of our students PS – 8th
grade. Choral presentations will occur
in the Steve G. Caloudas Center beginning at 6:00 p.m.
Preview Dates: The kindergarten held their meeting
today. Please note the rest of the
upcoming dates and note the 4th grade time change. We hope any new parents can also attend with
our returning parents. It is also an opportunity to connect with your new-to-AOS
families. All meetings will be in the
multipurpose room.
