Giving our Olympics Decorations New Life and Meaning
Penny Angelo

Every year, the AOS Olympics burst into life with decorations that transform our campus. From a pirate island filled with treasure, to a full-fledged circus, this annual event provides a lifetime of joyful memories for everyone in our community. But what happens to all of the decorations after the torch is extinguished?

For over 10 years, I have been involved with the Periwinkle Foundation as a top fundraiser, an Advisory Board Member and, as my most rewarding role, the Director of Day Camp. Periwinkle Day Camp is a week-long summer day camp for children, ages 7-12, who are currently being treated or were previously treated at Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Center. In 2019, I attended a Day Camp planning meeting where my love for our school and the Foundation converged.

After seeing how many of our beautiful decorations were being discarded after Closing Ceremony, I proposed that Periwinkle Day Camp should choose the same theme as AOS Olympics, and the vibrant decor could find another purpose, gaining a second life filled with just as much happiness, and perhaps even more meaning.

Since that day, numerous items have been reused including inflatables, themed banners, handcrafted props, and even costume pieces! It’s a simple gesture with a big impact, turning what could be waste into wonder, and bringing a spark of celebration to children who are facing some of life’s toughest challenges, cancer and chemotherapy.

This tradition has come to represent something greater than just sustainability. While it teaches us about the power of reuse, it really demonstrates the power of kindness. It reminds us that our actions, even the smallest ones, can ripple out into the world in meaningful ways. We’re not just being eco-friendly; we’re extending the spirit of community and compassion far beyond our school. With every piece of decor we pack up and pass on, we send love, support, and a little bit of sunshine to those who need it more than anything.
