Pumpkin Predictions
Penny Angelo

1st-grade students practiced their math skills with pumpkins! Teachers and parent volunteers facilitated a learning experience filled with counting, teamwork, and a whole lot of pumpkin guts! Students were placed into groups where they had to make various estimations about a pumpkin. They began by drawing a picture of their pumpkin, counting the number of creases, and measuring the height, weight, and circumference. With this information in hand, students opened the tops of their pumpkins and examined the seeds. Each group estimated how many seeds were inside, and then the real work began. Students took turns scooping out the seeds and counted by 10’s to find the actual amount. Skip counting really came in handy for this project. One pumpkin had 400 seeds!
