Service Project for Afghan Refugees
Penny Angelo

The AOS community jumped into action last week when an urgent call for donations arose. Due to the recent unrest in Afghanistan, many refugees were quickly arriving in Houston with limited resources and needs that would become a major burden if left unmet. In partnership with Interfaith Ministries, AOS students and their families answered the call during our Back to School Bash, donating numerous hygiene items, small appliances, kitchen necessities, school supplies, and more. Several 8th-grade students volunteered their time to move the donations into our modular building until they could be taken to Refugee Services of Texas. This past Wednesday, the donations were dropped off where they were met with tears of gratitude. The staff at Refugee Services were beyond grateful and explained that they would be using the items to outfit apartments for refugees. Thank you to AOS parent, Catherine Matthews, who also coordinated with HEB to deliver a truckload of personal care items, and a special thanks goes to the following PTC Service Learning Chairs who coordinated this project:

  • Nancy Mathé
  • Belinda McGinty
  • Koetting Jackson
  • Brooke Beebe
