3rd Grade Grit
Penny Angelo

What does it take to build something great with classmates? Mrs. Shelton taught a social and emotional learning lesson on perseverance and grit to 3rd-grade students. Using only pipe cleaners, students worked in teams to build a tower. During the activity, students had to adjust to ever-changing rules making the task at hand more difficult. At one point, all students had to work with one hand behind their backs, and at another time, students could not talk at all! Each team enjoyed the activity despite its challenges, and in the end, the lesson was less about building the tallest tower and more about the hard work and dedication it takes to work through obstacles.
