Writing with Play-Doh
Penny Angelo

What do writing and Play-Doh have in common? Both require a multi-step process to turn words and pieces of dough into a final product. Ms. Lange used this fun material to teach 7th-grade students about the creative writing process. Students began by sketching their design for a Play-Doh creation. This was compared to the pre-writing stage of the writing process. Next, students began to form their sculptures, similar to the drafting stage. Then, they revised their work by adding or taking an element away, gathered feedback from their peers, edited their creations, and finally published their work by displaying the Play-Doh creation. Each step allowed students to visualize the writing process in a very tactile way!
