Kindergarten

The Kindergarten program is the third entry point at Annunciation Orthodox School with approximately 12 qualified applicants admitted.  Each of the three classes has 18-20 students per class and a teacher and full-time assistant.

Admissions decisions are based on the child’s development in a variety of areas, social and emotional maturity, and readiness for the AOS Kindergarten academic program.

    • Evaluations

      • Candidates will have one scheduled visit to AOS on a Saturday morning in January.  Classroom visits include playtime with other children, work with teachers, and other group activities.  Candidates should wear comfortable school clothes and be told that they will be playing at AOS that morning.
      • A partial battery cognitive assessment is required.  AOS requires the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence (WPPSI) as part of the cognitive assessment.
      • AOS strongly recommends and prefers that the evaluation is administered by the Collaborative Academic Testing Service (C.A.T.S.).  Evaluation fee is $290.00.
        • If that is not possible, then only another HAIS school evaluator or a service connected with an institution such as Baylor College of Medicine or Texas Children’s Hospital is acceptable.  To schedule the WPPSI-IV or WISC-V through C.A.T.S., click here
      • NOTE:
        • Evaluations by independent assessors may not be accepted.
        • Tutoring:  Tutoring and test prep is not an approved or a recommended practice.  This practice can be counter-productive and could result in undue pressure on the child, development of test anxiety, erosion of self-worth and self-confidence, as well as possible misplacement in classes.  Inflated scores can cause higher expectations than the child is able to meet; thus, compromising the child’s success.
        • Any indication of “practice” in any manner for an assessment may result in an invalid file and ultimately non-acceptance, or rescinded acceptance, into AOS.
        • The WPPSI or WISC may be given only once a year.
      • A telephone conference to discuss evaluation results can be requested after the Decision Letters are received.

    Age Requirements

    • The Kindergarten program is a developmentally appropriate academic program designed for children who are five years of age by July 15.  There are no exceptions to this date.

    • All parents are encouraged to attend a weekday tour during the admissions season. These opportunities are for parents only; please do not bring children or infants.  Tours are not given after the application deadline.
