Carry the Torch

Welcome and thank you for your interest in The Carry The Torch Capital Campaign. In the pages that follow, we are excited to share more detailed information about The Carry The Torch Capital Campaign!

Based on a comprehensive needs assessment by noted architectural firm Gensler, a Master Plan has been developed to address critical campus and facilities issues. The planned improvements will be carried out in two major phases.

In October 2013, the Board of Trustees unanimously approved proceeding with Phase I of the Master Plan currently expected to cost approximately $18 million.  The Carry The Torch Capital Campaign seeks to fund Phase I of the Master Plan, thereby transforming our campus with a new Lower School and Early Childhood building, new Dining Hall and expanded green space.

  • Current Campus Challenges

In 1988, AOS moved from its original home inside the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral complex to establish its own campus in a building across Yoakum Boulevard.  Over the next two decades, as enrollment increased, AOS acquired adjacent properties and converted existing buildings into facilities for the school.  Today, AOS has a 4.7-acre campus that occupies two city blocks on the edge of Houston’s Museum District.

With the completion of the campus footprint, the AOS leadership recognized that the school’s piecemeal growth over the years created a variety of challenges to its existing facilities.  After an extensive interview and research process that included parents, staff, faculty and trustees, a new Master Plan for AOS was developed and presented to the school community through a series of neighborhood gatherings between January and May 2013.

The Master Plan addresses a number of critical campus and facilities issues including:
    • Undersized Lower School classrooms
    • Limited science education space
    • Limited room for tutoring/small group work
    • Undersized dining facilities
    • Additional green/play space desired
    • Inadequate meeting/storage space
    • Accessibility issues
    • Limited arts rehearsal/performance space
The response was highly enthusiastic, and the Board of Trustees unanimously voted in October 2013 to launch a capital campaign to move forward with Phase I of the Master Plan.
  • Project Solutions

Phase I will focus on a new three-story building for Lower School and Early Childhood students, a new and larger Dining Hall, a larger covered Pavilion, and a reconfigured and expanded green space, unifying the campus buildings around a beautiful focal point. Phase II will focus on the Enrichment Hub, which will include an enrichment building for academic and extracurricular activities, a black box theater, a second courtyard with a Greek-style amphitheater, and a sky bridge which will connect the north and south sides of the campus.
