Lower School (Grades 1-4)

The Lower School Grades at Annunciation Orthodox School include an average of 60 children in each grade level with approximately 18-20 students per class.  First grade has two teachers per classroom.  Academic support staff assists classroom teachers to extend or review elements of the program with all students.  Fourth grade introduces four subject-area teachers reducing class size. Typically, available spaces for these grade levels are created by attrition.

Admissions decisions are based on the child’s overall development including social and emotional maturity, character, self-discipline, and preparedness for the AOS academic program.

List of 3 items.

  • Evaluations

    • First grade candidates are required to take the Admissions Assesment for Beginning Learners (AABL)
    • The Admissions Assessment for Beginning Learners (AABL) will be scheduled upon receipt of application.

    • Appropriate levels of the Independent School Entrance Examination (ISEE) for grades 2-4 or the Admission Assessment for Beginning Learners (AABL) for first grade will be administered to applicants for Lower School grades during a visit to AOS.
    • If the ISEE or AABL is being administered at another school, parents are required to inform the Admissions Office.
    • A cognitive assessment is required.  AOS requires the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence (WPPSI-IV) for first-grade applicants and the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-V) for all other grade levels.
    • AOS strongly recommends and prefers that the evaluation is administered by the Collaborative Academic Testing Service (C.A.T.S.).  Evaluation fee is $290.00.
      • If that is not possible, then only another HAIS school evaluator or a service connected with an institution such as Baylor College of Medicine or Texas Children’s Hospital is acceptable.  To schedule the WPPSI-IV or WISC-V through C.A.T.S.,  click here
    • If that is not possible, then only another HAIS school evaluator or a service connected with an institution such as Baylor College of Medicine or Texas Children’s Hospital is acceptable.

  • Things To Note

    • Evaluations by independent assessors may not be accepted.
    • Tutoring and test prep is not an approved or a recommended practice.  This practice can be counter-productive and could result in undue pressure on the child, development of test anxiety, erosion of self-worth and self-confidence, as well as possible misplacement in classes.  Inflated scores can cause higher expectations than the child is able to meet; thus, compromising the child’s success.
    • Any indication of “practice” in any manner for an assessment may result in an invalid file and ultimately non-acceptance, or rescinded acceptance, into AOS.
    • The WPPSI-IV or WISC-V may be given only once a year.
    • Admissions Decision Letters will be mailed in mid-March.
    • A telephone conference to discuss evaluation results can be requested after the Decision Letters are received.
