192 of the top schools gathered in Chicago May 11-13 for the Middle School National Championship Tournament. The AOS team consisted of eighth graders and one seventh grader: Captain Kile Stenoien, Alex Adkins, Nicholas Klopp, John Dameris, Daniel Locklar, and Scott Bera. Nationals was an extremely tough competition. Every game was a nail-biter!
The lead team switched with each question. Only 72 teams advanced to the finals on Sunday. AOS had been to three national tournaments before but had never made it to the playoffs. This year we did!
AOS won the first playoff game 340-250. The next opponent was a tough school, but AOS came out ahead 380-345. AOS lost the 3rd game to the school who ended up coming in 2nd place in the entire tournament. The playoffs are double elimination so the boys played again and beat TH Rogers 400-280. The quiz bowl team lost their last game 485-235. Overall, their performance earned AOS 21st place out of 192 teams!
Individually both Kile Stenoien and Alex Adkins tied at 138th place of the 986 students competing. Natalie McAfee and AOS are so proud of these fine students for their interest in doing their best academically and for the commitment and dedication they have shown to quiz bowl all year!
